Genachowski was a Harvard classmate of Barack Obama and served as the President’s technology advisor and strategist during the recent Presidential campaign. He also was a fundraiser, who brought in more than $500,000 in campaign contributions to Obama-Biden campaign committee.

He previously served as the Chief Counsel for FCC Chairman Reed Hundt during the Clinton Administration. Mr. Genachowski was the co-founder of venture capital firm, LaunchBox Digital, headquartered in the Washington DC area.

Genachowski is known to support an "open" Internet with net neutrality protections, media ownership rules that promote diversity, and the expansion of access to and use of broadband services.

The Nomination and Confirmation Process

President Obama formally nominated Julius Genachowski, age 46, to the position of FCC Chairman on March 3, 2009. His confirmation hearing was held on June 17. On June 19, the Senate put the nomination on the fast track, pending any holds.

Genachowski will succeed Kevin Martin, who was appointed by President Bush. Commissioner Michael Copps has been serving as the Acting Chairman, since Inauguration Day.
