Wireless Operator Maps of Market Coverage Areas

To assist potential customers in determining whether service is available in their area, Clearwire / Clear Mobile WiMAX and Xanadoo have posted maps of the coverage areas for broadband wireless Internet access networks that have been deployed. Potential customers use the interactive maps to conduct a search by address. Maps of Portland, Oregon from the “Clear” WiMAX website and of Springfield, Illinois from the Xanadoo website are shown below.

The GSA map provided by the FCC in the ULS database shows the area licensed for broadband wireless access service. In contrast, the Market Coverage Area Map provided by a wireless operator shows the geographical areas of the market where the wireless broadband access service is actually available. A wireless operator will design the cellular network to cover the areas with sufficient population to support its operational needs. This may not include all of the area licensed by the FCC.

Channels from as many as 10 EBS and BRS licenses may be used in a wireless broadband network. The Protected Service Areas of the EBS (GSA) and BRS (GSA or BTA) licenses are usually different. In addition, channels can be reused throughout the network in nonadjacent cells.

The end result of the interplay of system players is a commercial service that is initially viable and can expand over time. It is in this manner that Intel’s vision of using its WiMAX technology to bring broadband to the masses will soon be realized.

Note: Coverage maps are for illustration purposes only and are not a guarantee that adequate service is available. Coverage levels and service quality may vary.
