SpecEx: The Online Marketplace for Spectrum™Spectrum Bridge Inc. has created the world's first online real-time marketplace for licensed radio spectrum, the Spectrum Exchange, or "SpecEx." SpecEx contains the industry’s largest inventory of available spectrum for sale or lease. Providing an easy to use web-based platform, a fixed set of trading rules, and standardized agreements, SpecEx makes purchasing and leasing spectrum straight forward, transparent, and cost effective. Users can search for available spectrum by specific criteria, such as frequency, FCC part number, market boundaries, type of application, and other parameters. The search results can be viewed on a map, and are also presented in a table format so that multiple results can be viewed and managed. Specex has been called "the eBay of wireless spectrum" by NetworkWorld. Specex focuses on all types of licensed spectrum, which is typically free from harmful electronic interference, making it suitable for mission-critical applications. Studies have shown that there is a vast pool of unused and underutilized spectrum in the US. To monetize license assets, FCC licensees can list available spectrum for lease or sale on SpecEX. For instance, EBS Licensees that are not using the high power middle band channel can now list it for lease (if not restricted from doing so by other leases). EBS Licensees can use this strategy to find partners and commercial enterprises to lease these channels and help meet the FCC build out requirements. The SpecEx interface allows users to search for available spectrum by FCC license classifications for the various broadcast services, such as Educational Broadband Service (EBS) and Broadband Radio Service (BRS). Licensees with available spectrum can list their offerings on SpecEx. To list spectrum on Specex, you must become a member ($500 for an annual membership), and there is a fixed commission on any completed lease or sale. Membership to SpecEx also give you access to special services and reports on the site. In addition to the online marketplace, Spectrum Bridge provides spectrum valuation services, and the website itself has valuable educational materials in its Knowledge Center. Spectrum Bridge has also launched ShowMyWhiteSpace.com, a free website where visitors can find newly available unlicensed spectrum freed up by the digital TV transition. The amount of this white space spectrum varies widely throughout the country and this site makes it easy to see which channels are available at a particular location. |
